Neither is “better” - they are built for different goals

If you want maximum power and deep tuning, where the widest choice of parts and controllers matters, choose Sur-Ron (Light Bee X, Ultra Bee or Storm Bee). If you want a tough, long-lasting base with less maintenance and easier road legality in town, choose Talaria (Sting R, MX5 Pro or the registrable Sting R L1e). Both platforms only show their real potential with the right controller, battery and settings - exactly what we build and program in our Kaunas workshop.

Sur-Ron vs Talaria: how the platforms differ

Both are 60V mid-drive electric motorcycles with a removable Li-ion battery. They differ in design philosophy, aftermarket support and riding character.

Sur-Ron - light and agile

Just ~57 kg, belt primary drive and instant throttle response. The largest, oldest and best-documented parts ecosystem - ideal for extreme builds.

  • Light Bee X - ~8 kW peak, 60V 40Ah, the versatile entry model.
  • Ultra Bee - ~12.5 kW, bigger battery, chain drive, traction control.
  • Storm Bee - ~22 kW, 90V (earlier) / 104V (newer), motorcycle-sized; a road-legal version exists.

Talaria - tough and stable

Heavier (~65 kg), but a stronger frame and a sealed oil-bath gearbox instead of a belt - fewer maintenance worries, a steadier feel at speed. The standard battery is bigger (45Ah).

  • Sting R / MX4 - ~8 kW peak, 60V 45Ah, a solid all-round base.
  • MX5 Pro - more power, upgraded suspension and electronics.
  • Sting R L1e - factory road-legal, registrable version.

Power and tuning potential

How much power tuning can unlock

Stock versions of both platforms make around 8 kW peak. The real jump starts when you replace the controller (MCU), and for more power - the battery and motor too. The most popular plug&play solution is the Torp TC500 2.X: it supports 60-80 V (22S) and delivers up to ~25 kW peak. Configured from a phone app (iOS/Android).

The alternatives are eBMX X-9000 V3 and SiliXcon SL / SC / AM controllers. For more power you raise voltage (72V / 80V) and use stronger cells (Molicel P50B, Samsung 50S), QS8 connectors, 6AWG power wiring and an upgraded throttle (Domino).

The practical difference: the Sur-Ron parts ecosystem is deeper and better documented for 30 kW+ builds; Talaria feels especially clean and reliable around 15-20 kW thanks to its stronger frame. FabiRide builds custom systems and programs the most advanced controllers in-house, tuned to your goal.

Sur-Ron has the largest and oldest parts market: controllers, batteries, suspension kits, frame protection, wheels, lighting, chain conversions. Almost anything you can imagine, somebody already makes.

Talaria aftermarket is growing fast, and some components cross over with Sur-Ron - bars, grips, lights, brake pads, some wheels. But the core power parts - controllers, motors and batteries - are brand-specific and not interchangeable.

FabiRide stocks original and tuning parts for both platforms (QS8 connectors, Talaria Sting battery adapters, Domino throttles, axles, wiring looms) and ships across the EU and worldwide. Not sure which part fits your model - message us and we will check.

Road legality

Can you ride them on public roads?

The most important practical difference for a city rider is road legality. Here is how it really works under the EU vehicle category system.

Registrable (L1e) versions

Can be registered and ridden on public roads.

  • Talaria Sting R L1e - factory L1e compliance (moped class, limited to ~45 km/h). The easiest route to legal city riding.
  • You need: a moped-class licence, registration, insurance and a helmet - check the exact rules in your own country. The kit includes headlight, mirrors, indicators and a plate holder.
  • Sur-Ron Storm Bee has a road-legal (L3e) version - that one needs a motorcycle licence.

Off-road (MX) versions

Made for private land, tracks and enduro.

  • Standard Light Bee X / Sting R MX versions cannot be registered for public roads.
  • Remove the L1e limiter and the bike no longer meets L1e requirements - it becomes illegal on the road.
  • FabiRide can supply the road-legal equipment and advise on what the registration process usually requires.

Sur-Ron or Talaria - FAQ

Which is better - Sur-Ron or Talaria?
Neither is objectively “better” - they are built for different goals. Sur-Ron is chosen by riders who want the biggest parts ecosystem and deep tuning (30 kW+); Talaria - by those who want a tougher, lower-maintenance base and easier road registration (Sting R L1e). For daily city riding we usually suggest the Talaria Sting R L1e, and for an extreme build - the Sur-Ron Light Bee X.
Can Sur-Ron and Talaria be registered and ridden on public roads?
Yes, if it is a registrable L1e version (for example the Talaria Sting R L1e) - it is registered as a moped-class vehicle, limited to ~45 km/h, and normally needs a moped licence, insurance and a helmet; check the exact requirements in your own country. Standard off-road (MX) versions cannot be registered for public roads and are meant for private land or tracks. The Sur-Ron Storm Bee has a more powerful road-legal (L3e) version that requires a motorcycle licence. We can supply the road-legal equipment and advise on the process.
How much power can tuning unlock?
Stock versions make around 8 kW peak. Replacing the controller (for example the Torp TC500 2.X, which supports 60-80 V) can take you to ~25 kW peak. Talaria feels cleanest around 15-20 kW, while the Sur-Ron platform is the best base for 30 kW+ builds. More power needs a stronger battery (Molicel P50B / Samsung 50S), QS8 connectors and 6AWG wiring. We tune the settings to your goal and to safe limits. All work and parts we supply are covered by warranty.
Are Sur-Ron and Talaria parts interchangeable?
Partly. Cross-compatible parts tend to be the small ones - bars, grips, lights, brake pads, some wheels. But controllers, motors and batteries are brand-specific and not interchangeable. So always confirm your exact model before buying a part - we check compatibility for you before we ship.
Which one is more reliable and needs less maintenance?
Talaria uses a sealed oil-bath gearbox, so there is no belt tensioning or replacement to worry about - for daily use that is often more convenient (just a periodic oil change). The belt-driven Sur-Ron is lighter and more agile, but the belt needs looking after. Both platforms are reliable when the battery, controller and wiring are done properly - which is exactly what we do at FabiRide.
What should a beginner choose?
For a beginner who wants to ride legally in town we usually suggest the Talaria Sting R L1e - tough, registrable and low-maintenance. On a smaller budget, a Talaria Sting or a checked used Sur-Ron Light Bee X works well and can be tuned in stages later. Send us the details of a used bike and we will tell you what to inspect on the battery and electronics.

We tune, program and replace the most advanced electric motorcycle motor controllers - in the FabiRide workshop in Kaunas. We work with most controllers on the market, and we program ASI BAC and SiliXcon controllers and match them to any motor, so the whole system runs smoothly.
