Sur-Ron and Talaria - the two leading electric light motorcycle platforms. In short: if you want the deepest tuning and the widest parts choice (30 kW+) - go Sur-Ron Light Bee X; if you want a tougher, lower-maintenance base and easier road registration (L1e) - go Talaria Sting R. Neither is “better” - they are built for different goals
If you want maximum power and deep tuning, where the widest choice of parts and controllers matters, choose Sur-Ron (Light Bee X, Ultra Bee or Storm Bee). If you want a tough, long-lasting base with less maintenance and easier road legality in town, choose Talaria (Sting R, MX5 Pro or the registrable Sting R L1e). Both platforms only show their real potential with the right controller, battery and settings - exactly what we build and program in our Kaunas workshop.
Sur-Ron vs Talaria: how the platforms differ
Both are 60V mid-drive electric motorcycles with a removable Li-ion battery. They differ in design philosophy, aftermarket support and riding character.
Sur-Ron - light and agile
Just ~57 kg, belt primary drive and instant throttle response. The largest, oldest and best-documented parts ecosystem - ideal for extreme builds.
- Light Bee X - ~8 kW peak, 60V 40Ah, the versatile entry model.
- Ultra Bee - ~12.5 kW, bigger battery, chain drive, traction control.
- Storm Bee - ~22 kW, 90V (earlier) / 104V (newer), motorcycle-sized; a road-legal version exists.
Talaria - tough and stable
Heavier (~65 kg), but a stronger frame and a sealed oil-bath gearbox instead of a belt - fewer maintenance worries, a steadier feel at speed. The standard battery is bigger (45Ah).
- Sting R / MX4 - ~8 kW peak, 60V 45Ah, a solid all-round base.
- MX5 Pro - more power, upgraded suspension and electronics.
- Sting R L1e - factory road-legal, registrable version.

How much power tuning can unlock
Stock versions of both platforms make around 8 kW peak. The real jump starts when you replace the controller (MCU), and for more power - the battery and motor too. The most popular plug&play solution is the Torp TC500 2.X: it supports 60-80 V (22S) and delivers up to ~25 kW peak. Configured from a phone app (iOS/Android).
The alternatives are eBMX X-9000 V3 and SiliXcon SL / SC / AM controllers. For more power you raise voltage (72V / 80V) and use stronger cells (Molicel P50B, Samsung 50S), QS8 connectors, 6AWG power wiring and an upgraded throttle (Domino).
The practical difference: the Sur-Ron parts ecosystem is deeper and better documented for 30 kW+ builds; Talaria feels especially clean and reliable around 15-20 kW thanks to its stronger frame. FabiRide builds custom systems and programs the most advanced controllers in-house, tuned to your goal.
Parts and compatibility
Sur-Ron has the largest and oldest parts market: controllers, batteries, suspension kits, frame protection, wheels, lighting, chain conversions. Almost anything you can imagine, somebody already makes.
Talaria aftermarket is growing fast, and some components cross over with Sur-Ron - bars, grips, lights, brake pads, some wheels. But the core power parts - controllers, motors and batteries - are brand-specific and not interchangeable.

Can you ride them on public roads?
The most important practical difference for a city rider is road legality. Here is how it really works under the EU vehicle category system.
Registrable (L1e) versions
Can be registered and ridden on public roads.
- Talaria Sting R L1e - factory L1e compliance (moped class, limited to ~45 km/h). The easiest route to legal city riding.
- You need: a moped-class licence, registration, insurance and a helmet - check the exact rules in your own country. The kit includes headlight, mirrors, indicators and a plate holder.
- Sur-Ron Storm Bee has a road-legal (L3e) version - that one needs a motorcycle licence.
Off-road (MX) versions
Made for private land, tracks and enduro.
- Standard Light Bee X / Sting R MX versions cannot be registered for public roads.
- Remove the L1e limiter and the bike no longer meets L1e requirements - it becomes illegal on the road.
- FabiRide can supply the road-legal equipment and advise on what the registration process usually requires.

~22 kW, 90V (earlier) / 104V (newer) system, 0-80 km/h in ~3.6 s. A road-legal (L3e) version exists.
Beginner
Get into the platform cheaper and add power and parts later. We can advise on what to check before you buy.
You dislike servicing
A sealed oil-bath drive instead of a belt - fewer adjustments and fewer surprises in daily use.
