Short answer

Your Sur-Ron controller choice depends on power and budget. The stock controller is fine for everyday riding up to ~90 A battery current; Torp TC500 2.X / TC1000 2.X is the most popular plug-and-play power upgrade with Bluetooth tuning; eBMX X-9000 V3 delivers the most power and the highest phase current; while SiliXcon SL is built for smoothness, reliability and professional tuning. FabiRide programs ASI and SiliXcon controllers in-house at our Kaunas workshop.

Power tiers

From stock to race level: approximate peak power

Power is not the only criterion, but it shows clearly where each controller sits. Below - approximate peak power on the Sur-Ron Light Bee platform with a suitable battery and wiring.

Where two values are given (e.g. 25 / 60 kW), they match the two models in that column, in the same order. Figures are approximate and depend on model year, battery discharge capability (C rating), wiring and settings. Battery current is calculated at working voltage. SiliXcon and ASI are valued not for peak power, but for smoothness, precision and reliability.

Our recommendation

Which controller should you choose?

For most riders the best balance is the Torp TC500 2.X / TC1000 2.X - a real jump in power, plug-and-play installation and easy Bluetooth tuning. If you are after maximum phase current - eBMX X-9000 V3. If smoothness, reliability and race-grade quality matter most - SiliXcon SL with professional tuning.

The key rule: a controller never works on its own.

  • The battery must handle the higher discharge current (C rating, BMS) - otherwise power is limited or the pack overheats.
  • Cables and connectors (QS8, 6AWG) must match the currents to avoid overheating and voltage drop.
  • Motor thermal limits and the throttle (e.g. Domino) must be matched to the new controller.

How an MCU works

What really determines power and feel

The motor controller (MCU) uses a sine wave (FOC) to control how much current, and in what form, reaches the motor. Two currents matter in any comparison:

  • Phase current - determines torque and the punch off the line. The higher it is, the more aggressive the acceleration.
  • Battery current - determines overall power and how much energy is drawn from the pack.
  • Tuning - limits, response, regen, protections. This is where premium controllers (SiliXcon, ASI BAC) need an expert.

So a more powerful controller alone guarantees nothing - the battery, wiring, motor and exact settings all have to work together. That is the heart of the job.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the stock Sur-Ron controller and the Torp TC500 2.X / TC1000 2.X?

The stock Light Bee controller is locked and limits current to roughly 90 A on the battery side (~6 kW peak) - reliable, but barely tunable. The Torp TC500 2.X is a plug-and-play replacement with a Bluetooth app, allowing up to 700 A phase current and up to 25 kW peak power (TC1000 2.X - up to 1000 A and up to 60 kW), with adjustable ride modes and regen.

Can I increase Sur-Ron power without changing the battery?

Partly. A more powerful controller demands matching battery discharge current (C rating) and a suitable BMS. If the original battery cannot take the higher current, power will be limited or the pack will overheat. That is why we always plan a power upgrade together with an assessment of the battery and wiring (QS8, 6AWG).

When is SiliXcon SL the better choice over the eBMX X-9000 V3?

The eBMX X-9000 V3 delivers the highest phase current (up to 1600 A), so it is ideal for powerful builds with a strong battery. SiliXcon SL is chosen when smoothness, precise control and maximum reliability matter most - for racing or top-tier builds, for example. SiliXcon requires professional programming, which we do in-house.

Does changing the controller void the Sur-Ron warranty?

Manufacturer warranty usually does not cover modified components. That is why we set out the risks clearly before any work, and cover the work we carry out and the parts we fit with our own warranty.

Do cables and connectors need replacing after a power upgrade?

Yes. At high currents we recommend QS8 connectors and 6AWG power cables to avoid overheating and voltage drop. Proper wiring is essential for safe, stable high-power operation.

How does controller installation and tuning work?

Three steps. 1) Consultation - based on your bike, battery and goal we select the controller and send you a quote. 2) Installation and tuning - you ship the bike or the parts to us, we fit the controller, upgrade the wiring harness and QS8 connectors if needed, then set current limits, throttle response, regen and thermal protections. 3) Testing and warranty - we measure under load, run a test ride and ship everything back with a warranty.

Can you match any motor with an ASI or SiliXcon controller?

Yes. We work with most controllers on the market, and ASI BAC4000 / BAC8000 and SiliXcon SL / SC / AM we program ourselves - SiliXcon runs on its own platform with the manufacturer’s software. That lets us pair virtually any motor with the chosen controller and tune it so the system runs smoothly: we set motor parameters, Hall/encoder signals, current limits, response and protections. FabiRide was the first workshop in Lithuania to officially integrate ASI controllers into Sur-Ron and Talaria bikes, and SiliXcon controllers we program and adapt entirely in-house.

Can you tune a controller I already own?

Yes. Controller tuning, configuration and programming (Torp, eBMX X-9000 V3, SiliXcon and ASI BAC4000 / BAC8000) is one of our specialities - send the unit or the bike to us and we handle ASI and SiliXcon programming in-house.
