Electric motorcycle faults and fixes

Electric motorcycle faults fall into four systems - wiring, the controller (MCU), the battery with its BMS, and mechanics. Most symptoms, from a dead display to missing power, can be narrowed down by one clear clue and either fixed safely at home or sent in to our Kaunas workshop, with parts shipped to you across the EU and worldwide. Below - a fault diagnosis comparison for Sur-Ron, Talaria and Eride Pro: the most common symptoms by system.

Four systems where almost every fault hides

Before you look for a fix, the fault has to be assigned to the right system. On an electric motorcycle, problems almost always sit in one of four: the wiring, the controller, the battery or the mechanics. The same colours are used in the diagnostic matrix below.

Wiring

Connectors, fuses, wiring harness, QS8 plugs, sensors and auxiliary circuits.

Symptoms: won’t power up, power drops out over bumps, lights dead.

Controller / MCU

Torp, eBMX and SiliXcon controller configuration, Hall sensors, throttle mapping, phase currents.

Symptoms: error codes, stuttering, power or speed limiting.

Battery / BMS

Li-ion cells, balancing, charging, protection thresholds and BMS control.

Symptoms: falling range, charging that stops, cut-off under load.

Mechanics

Bearings, brakes, transmission (chain/belt), wheels and the steering head.

Symptoms: odd noises, vibration, weak brakes, “floating” steering.

The matrix is indicative - the same symptom can point to different faults. An exact diagnosis is confirmed by testing with measuring equipment, so never guess your way through serious wiring, controller or battery work.

What to do yourself, and what to leave to a workshop

Basic checks and routine maintenance are often manageable at home with simple tools. But anything involving high voltage, battery cells or controller tuning needs equipment and experience, and is dangerous - here a mistake costs more than the repair.

Safety matters more than the repair. High voltage and a Li-ion battery can cause electric shock or fire. If you suspect a battery, BMS or controller problem - stop riding, don’t charge the bike unattended, and get in touch with specialists.

What does an electric motorcycle repair cost?

The cost depends on the system at fault, the parts needed, the model (Sur-Ron Light Bee X, Ultra Bee, Storm Bee, Talaria Sting R, MX3 / MX4, Eride Pro S) and the scope of work. A basic electrical check costs less than battery cell or controller work. We can’t publish fixed figures online, because they depend on the exact diagnosis - so we always assess and agree the quote up front. Describe the symptom and we’ll come back with an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Sur-Ron and Talaria faults?
Four types come up most often: wiring connection problems (oxidised contacts, a loose QS8 connector), controller (MCU) errors and overheating with power limiting, battery and BMS faults (falling range, cut-off under load), and mechanical wear (bearings, brakes, chain). The exact fault depends on the model and how the bike is used, but nearly all of them belong to one of these four systems.
Can I diagnose the fault myself?
A basic check - yes. You can check the fuse, the QS8 connector contact, tyre pressure, brake pads and give the wiring a visual inspection. But controller error codes, battery cells and BMS diagnostics need measuring equipment and experience, and working with high voltage is dangerous. If the symptom involves power, charging or error codes, it’s safer to hand it to a workshop.
How do I tell whether it’s the battery or the controller?
A simple rule: if the range drops or charging fails - the battery and BMS are the more likely culprits. If you get error codes, the motor stutters or you lose part of the power with no change in charging - suspect the controller (MCU) and the Hall sensors. Even so, the two systems interact (low battery voltage can force the controller to limit power), so the final cause is confirmed by diagnostics.
What do diagnostics and repair cost?
The cost depends on the system at fault, the parts needed, the model and the scope of work, so we can’t publish a fixed figure online. We always agree the quote before starting work. Do you repair bikes bought elsewhere and other brands?
Yes. We work on Sur-Ron, Talaria, Eride Pro and other electric motorcycles and e-bikes, no matter where they were bought. The workshop is in Kaunas (S. Raštikio g. 28) and we take in bikes and parts sent to us from across the EU and beyond.
Is it safe to ride with a BMS or controller error?
No. A BMS error can mean cell imbalance or overload, and a controller error - uncontrolled power delivery. Either way you risk losing power unexpectedly while riding, or damaging the battery. Stop riding, don’t charge the bike unattended and get it to a workshop as soon as you can.
How does the repair work?
We start with diagnostics: we read the error codes and check the battery and BMS, the controller, the wiring harness, the connectors and the throttle to find the real cause, not the symptom. Once found, we send an estimate - the repair only starts once you approve it. Afterwards we test under load and on a test ride, explain what was replaced, and warrant both the work and the parts fitted.

Controllers we work with

We tune, program and replace the most advanced electric motorcycle motor controllers - at the FabiRide workshop in Kaunas. We work with most controllers on the market, and ASI BAC and SiliXcon controllers we program and match to any motor, so the system runs smoothly.

  • Torp TC500 2.X FOC motor controller - FabiRide, KaunasTorp TC500 2.X / TC1000 2.X FOCPlug-and-play power upgrade with Bluetooth tuning - from 25 kW (TC500) to 60 kW (TC1000).
